Bid Packets Now Available for 2009-2010 Season

Bid packets are now available for the 2009-2010 Regional Open Circuit (downloadable from the lefthand FRED menu). To be eligible, tournaments must be held between September 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010. Four to six tournaments will be designated as ROC events for the upcoming competitive season. Bids must be submitted to the USFA national office by Friday, May 29, with the ROC selections to be announced in late June.

This is the same circuit as this season's National Open Circuit. The name is changed for next season to better describe the nature of the circuit.

Informal information sessions about the ROC and the bid process will be held at the Portland NAC in April; specific details will be available at the NAC registration desk at the venue.

Jeff Wolfe Long Island Challenge Designated as 4th NOC Tournament

The Jeff Wolfe Long Island Challenge, to be held May 2 & 3 at Mission Fencing Center in Rocky Point, New York, will be the fourth tournament of the 2008-2009 National Open Circuit.

This season's final NOC tournament is dedicated to Jeff Wolfe, longtime coach at Long Island's Brentwood High School, with 18 undefeated seasons. He was the first high school coach selected to coach the U.S. Cadet Team; eight of his fencers became collegiate All-Americans and four represented the United States in world championships. Nominated for the USFA Hall of Fame in 2006, Wolfe continues to work at Mission and as an assistant at Ward Melville High School.

Fees are $15 for registration and $45 per event until April 17, with double fees until April 29, and triple fees thereafter. Mission Fencing Center is a 30,000 square foot facility with dorms for camps and a full-service cafe for food and refreshments. All scoring machines will have time and score, and software is being written to make this the first paperless fencing tournament in the U.S.

The top four finishers in each weapon qualify for the Division I-A event at the 2009 Summer Nationals.

National Open Circuit FAQ

-What is the National Open Circuit?
Div IA level fencers have been historically underserved by the national tournament structure. The National Open Circuit or NOC, is a new competitive series established by the USFA Board of Directors to help expand the reliable strength of larger regional and super- regional events below the Div I NAC level. It will serve as a both as developmental paths for athletes and to provide level-appropriate tournaments for Div IA fencers, as well as provide a points list to track progress and to crown a season-long champion. It is made up of strong, locally run tournaments across the nation, and Division IA Summer Nationals.

-Who can participate in NOC events?
NOC events are open to any fencer aged 13 and up or on the Junior National Rolling Points List. Foreign fencers are also welcome to participate in NOC events, provided they have appropriate USFA or FIE membership. Participation in Div IA Summer Nationals is, of course, limited to fencers who qualify either through their Section Championships, or by placing in the top 4 at an NOC.

-How to I earn points at NOC events?
Points are awarded to the top 32 places at NOCs, however, a fencer must advance into Table B of the DE Tableau in order to earn points. Div IA Summer Nationals earns points at a 1.5 strength factor.

-Do NOC events earn points on the National Rolling Points List or Team Selection List?
No. The NOC/DivIA points list is separate from the National Rolling Points List. No points are earned at NOC or DivIA events that count toward Team Selections.

-Are names printed on uniforms required for NOC events?
At this time, for the 2008-2009 season, printed names are not required for NOC events, unless the organizer requires it for a reason all their own.

-Who is in charge of the NOC?
The Board of Directors established the National Open Circuit Task Group at its Annual Meeting, September 21st, 2008. The NOC Task Group was given a two-fold mission by the Board of Directors - 1) put together the first season's events and circuit structure serve as a test bed for ideas and planning. 2) Come up with a set of parameters to run the circuit in future seasons, and report back on that plan in February. Once the current season is off the ground, work will begin on establishing a more formal process for future seasons. Some of the issues the BOD has asked the Task Group to address by February are bid construction, selection paradigms, resource development and sanctioning.
